VALE RAY GUNSTONIt is with great sadness that we hear of the sudden passing of life member Ray “Gunna” Gunston.
Ray was a very active and important member during his time with the club. Starting in 1968 Ray played his Junior football with the Mores and went on to achieve a notable career winning the A Reserves best and fairest in 1975, EDFL representation in 1978, a premiership player in 1984 and Runner in the 1989 Premiership. Ray also coached our Under 13’s in 1976 & ’77 winning the Under 13A Premiership in 1977. He also had a successful football career with Brunswick in the VFA.
Following in the footsteps of his parents Maurie & Clare (both Life Members), Ray was made a Life Member of our club in 1989. His dad Maurie was a long standing Treasurer of the club and Ray took over from him for the 1993 and 1994 seasons.
After a successful corporate career Ray went on to become a Board Member, then Chief Executive Officer of AFL club Essendon, he then become Part of the Executive Team under Gill McLachlan at the AFL, responsible for Finance, Major Projects and Investment. In this role Ray is credited with steering the AFL through the financial challenges of the Covid Pandemic.
Club President John Elliott said “It is a very sad day for the club and all those who knew Gunna. Our thoughts are with wife Mandy, children Jack, Kate and their families”.
